A nice long one this week highlighting a fantastic album: Brothers, released by the bluesy indie band The Black Keys earlier this year. Recently nominated for a Grammy, the album is a rich and eclectic homage to all sorts of genres and time periods. Listen and see if you can pick up the common threads.

Introducing...Fanfarlo

Hey friends! This band has been around for awhile but I've had them on quite heavy rotation recently. Pretty, catchy indie pop just the way I like it. Enjoy!

Also - an important note: If you would like to download any past podcasts from the last year, you will need to do so before the end of this week. The filesharing site I used to use (drop.io) was eaten by the facebook juggernaut, so links will no longer be valid after this week. Download away, friends, and enjoy the many tunes!! http://www.tinycometsradio.blogspot.com

Playlist

London, like many cities around the world, has just launched a massive cycle sharing scheme.

Six Blocks

I'll always be amazed at how music connects people.
This one's for my unnamed cab driver, who, last week, gave me an effervescent and thorough history of blues music, complete with samples and countless recommendations, on what would have otherwise been a nondescript ten minute ride home.

Enjoy! There's some positively fantastic stuff in here.

Playlist
1- robert nighthawk - my sweet lovin' woman (ca. 1948)
originally a delta bluesman, he was good friends with muddy waters and had a great recording history in chicago. i love this song.
2- elmore james - sunnyland (ca. 1953)
known as king of the slide guitar ("he invented that opening guitar riff we use in so many rock songs today"), he always wore a bow tie and black suit like an undertaker. frail and asthmatic, he died at age 44 from a bad heart ("not drugs or anything like that").
3- tampa red - detroit blues (ca. 1938)
one of the great old school chicago bluesmen and a boundary-pusher in a lot of ways. i love the kazoo here...and the warning of the dangers of detroit. :)
4- lonnie johnson - another night to cry (ca. 1961)
a classic chicago bluesman in the 20's and 30's, he played with the likes of louis armstrong and duke ellington, and is known as the pioneer of the guitar solo. that's right, this man invented the guitar solo - specifically, on the 1927 track "6/88 glide". he was also known as a great soulful singer later in life, like in this tune.
5- freddie king - help me through the day (ca. 1973)
this famed texas and chicago blues guitarist started playing with many of the blues revivalists of the 60's, like eric clapton, just before he died of heart failure at age 42.
6- tampa red - things 'bout coming my way (ca. 1931)
a classic blues guitar instrumental. you can really hear the history in this one.

Papillon

Here, in honor of the second day of spring, three soft acoustic tunes that are almost too pretty. Good for reminiscing, driving in the slanted sun, walking in the drizzle and fog, or doing nothing at all.

3- robert johnson - when you've got a good friend (ca. 1936)

Idiosynchronicity

Those who know me know that I have a high appreciation for personalities that are just a little bit 'quirky' (just ask for my opinions on joe biden or rasheed wallace...).

Looking to push some boundaries this week by sharing some little gems that each have a personality all their own. Enjoy!

Playlist
1- lee 'scratch' perry - judgement day - joyful quirkiness from the legendary jamaican reggae producer - one of the forefathers of dub music in the early 70's, well ahead of his time, and considered completely nuts by many
2- prefuse 73 - desks. pencils. bottles - speaks for itself
3- mux mool - teal trim - this one makes me want to teleport back to 1985 and wear those weird plastic sunglasses with the slotted lenses
4- shuta hasunuma - discover tokyo - this japanese electronic artist makes complex and understated compositions

The Outkast Podkast.. and some new mash-up mixing skills!

This one was a lot of fun!
9 of my favorite tracks mashed into 15 minutes of awesome, just to remind us how Outkast totally changed the landscape of hip hop and pop culture in the last many years. Amazing beats, ridiculous flows, and provocative messages throughout.. plus the promise of a new album in 2010?..

Enjoy this one and hopefully you'll discover a track or two you haven't heard before.

They're creative and modern, and I guarantee you'll feel just a little bit cooler with each listen.

And yes, it's spelled Miike. A Swedish thing, I guess.

Happy 2010! Time flies, a new decade, etc. etc.

So, I'm starting the year off with a totally new approach to these podcasts. Going forward, look for bite-sized, mini-podcasts of just three songs each, coming to you weekly. More frequent, easier to digest in delicious pocket-sized snack format, and just as random as ever.
