You may have heard that the first World Cup ever hosted in Africa will kick off next week. Here, in preparation, a few tunes from the vast continent of a billion people, over a thousand languages, and just a little bit of great music. Hope you find some surprising new favorites.

awesome, bluesy, un-categorizable funk from a band that has been telling desert stories via libya, mali, and algeria for decades. check them out live in chicago on june 19th!

award-winning tanzanian hip hop called "cartoon rap"

a fun one from the world superstar still doing his thing
5- amadou & mariam - m'bife blues (mali, 2004)
one of my absolute favorites; a beautiful, haunting love song from what might be the world's loveliest couple
